Juding the costumes this year were Heather Lewis, Police Chief James Sabath, Paul Salvatore and Liz Warren. Joining them, second from right, is Shari Donahue from the Zebra-Striped Whale, who donated free ice cream cones for all the costumed kids. Mayor Charles Swartz judged the Borough Award and the Mayor's Trophy categories.
The scariest category of them all - Halloween Horror - brought chills to the event. That's Katherine, Talia, and Max Tannenbaum from The Shining; Rebecca Schottmiller from The Ring; Ava Sophie Boland as a Zombie Hunter; and the Scream!.
Newtown Borough >> Rain and wind forced the annual Newtown Borough Halloween Parade inside, but it couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm.
Several hundred kids and their parents packed the comfortable and dry historic Newtown Theatre Saturday morning to show off an eclectic collection of costumes, from a giant blinking eyeball to Gritty, the Philadelphia Flyers’ new mascot.
“Thank you for coming out today to enjoy a rainy Halloween,” said Mayor Charles Swartz in welcoming everyone to the event. “Sorry the weather is not cooperating, but here we are inside the movie theatre with a hall filled with some great costumes.”
The historic hall bustled with excitement as a panel of judges, including Police Chief James Sabbath, Paul Salvatore, Heather Lewis and Liz Warren, inspected the various categories from TV and movies to family themes, scariest and homemade costumes.
They were met with an auditorium packed with costumed kids dressed as superheroes, the Cookie Monster, Winnie the Pooh, Paddington Bear, the Vampire King, Thomas the Train, the Three Blind Mice, the Shining, Zombie Hunter, mermaids, witches, Sponge Bob, characters from the movie “Frozen” and “101 Dalmatians” and from the TV cartoons “Bob’s Burgers” and “Monsters Inc.,” among many, many others.
Alf made a return trip to Earth for the event. Ms. PAC-MAN arrived via time machine from the 1980s. The pink Energizer Bunny wearing sunglasses and blue and black striped sandals rolled by. Founding Father Ben Franklin was there. And from a galaxy far, far away came characterss from Star Wars, including BB-8.
Newtown Borough Councilwoman Nicole Rodowicz served as emcee, introducing each character on stage in a mini-parade of categories.
“The costumes this year are amazing,” said Rodowicz as she introduced each child and family.
Taking this year’s grand prize - the Mayor’s Trophy - for best costume was Macey Ludwig of Newtown dressed as a giant jellyfish. The handmade costume was appropriately made out of an umbrella.
Winning the Newtown Borough Award was the Prousi family - Anthony, Sommer, Delfine and Louisa - dressed as characters from the book and movie, “Eloise.”
Rebecca Schottmiller, portraying the girl from the movie, “The Ring,” crawled out of the well to claim the title of scariest in the Halloween Horror category.
Meanwhile, Joseph, Gerard and Lauren Allen as Prince and the Revolution and Purple Rain won for best parent and child costume.

The morning concluded with a dance party on stage as Halloween music filled the historic hall.
